The
country of eternal clouds |
Andringitra
has been inaugurated on 6 October 1999 as national park . Its gate
situated at 97 km from Fianarantsoa in the valley of Namoly already
offers an impressive view on the mountain which highest point, the
peak Boby, is the second summit of Madagascar (2658 m). It is reputed
for its crown of persistent clouds even when surroundings are shining
with a radiant sun.
The
Park of an area of 31.160 ha settles on base of crystalline rock,
sandstone and granit . 40 km of tracks are fitted inside the park
allowing to observe a large diversity of ecosystem from the pluvial
forest of low altitude to grassland of high mountain . It contains
several historical sites as the cave of Amindrarivo having served
as refuge to Bara and Betsileo during their war against the Merina
royalty in 1860. Around the peaks, temperatures of winter are unique
to Madagascar (a record of - 8°C has already been registered there)
and precipitations of fine drizzle are frequent. The Park is opened
all the year

The
Flora |
The vegetation of Andringitra National Park is dependent on the slope
orientation , the altitude, the climates as well as on the types of
grounds. The mountain of Andringitra shelters precious vestiges of
the eastern primary forest. Between 700 - 800 m, a pluvial forest
of low altitude with small size trees develops under a fringe of deciduous
forest resisting to the dryness of the winter, such as the Aloe of
Andringitra. When approaching the summit and under the effect of the
cold, the grassy savannah and natural grasslands take possession of
the inaccessible stiff slopes. If the north part of the park seemed
monotonous, it is not less rich in terrestrial orchids with varied
forms and colors .

The
Fauna |
According to the legend, all birds of Madagascar give regularly appointment
in a mythical place named Amboromena. Probably seduced by the place,
75 species have elected domicile in the park as the endemic terrestrial
Rollier Atelonis and the False Soimanga of Salomonsen with its long
crooked beak or the small Fody which plumage turns to the vivid red
in period of loves of November to March. As for the lemurs , the small
Microcebe, the Lemur catta, the Lemur fulvus of a brilliant redhead
as well as four other species gamboling freely in forests or on rocks.
A particularly meticulous guide has received the Golden Ark Award
from the hands of the Prince Bernhard of Netherlands in the beginning
of the year 1998 , he had succeeded to identify a new endemic ant
kind. The Andringitra shelters also 14 batrachian species on 32 counted
in Madagascar.
